Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS MICROSUCTION?

A microscope is used to enable the treatment provider to clearly view the ear canal and ear drum whilst using a small suction device to accurately remove the wax.

HOW LONG WILL THE TREATMENT TAKE?

This will vary depending on the amount of wax and how impacted it is. For some, the treatment takes just a few minutes but if the wax is very hard the treatment may take a little longer. In most cases treatment is completed in one 20 minute session.

DO I NEED TO SOFTEN THE WAX BEFORE MY VISIT?

For most clients pre softening is not required. However, if you suspect or been advised that your wax is very hard, olive oil for 2 days prior to your appointment may be beneficial.

IS MICROSUCTION A NEW PROCEDURE?

No, microsuction has been around for many years being performed in ENT Out Patient Departments.

HOW SAFE IS MICROSUCTION?

Microsuction is generally considered to be the safest technique for removing ear wax when performed by a competent provider.

WHO WILL PERFORM THE PROCEDURE?

Registered General Nurse Joanna O'Brien will perform the microsuction.

I HAVE A PERFORATED EAR DRUM, CAN I STILL HAVE MICROSUCTION?

Yes, for many ear conditions microsuction is the only technique that should be performed for removing wax. If you are experiencing or have experienced any of the following, microsuction may still be performed; hearing loss, tinnitus, a perforated ear drum, grommets, previous ear surgery, mucous discharge from the ear, acute otitis externa (infection of the ear canal) or a foreign body in the ear.

HOW MUCH WILL THE TREATMENT COST?

At your appointment an examination to both ears will be performed and the opportunity for you to discuss any ear problems and concerns (fee applies). Microsuction to remove any ear wax will be performed as required. Only one appointment is usually needed and the cost of this service is £65.00. It is very unusual for treatment not to be completed in one visit, however occasionally if the ear wax is impacted then a follow up appointment may be required. (There will be no charge for the first follow up appointment if treated within 14 days of the original appointment.)
